busy getting ready to fly out

everyone is in the throes of last minute stuff. . . .

end of the year biz meetings. . . .

holiday gift-giving. . . .

shopping & packing. . . .

can't wait to be on that plane!

thoughts of my homeland. . . .

I only flew thru Karachi ages ago - in the mid-80s, I think. We didn't even get off the plane - but I recall, as some passengers disembarked, a whole exotic world of smells wafted in thru the plane door - igniting all my senses & kindling my imagination! : )

Made me think of a story I read years later, The Mistress of Spices - a novel by Chitra Divakaruni, one of my favorite authors. I think she was still writing under her maiden name then - Banerjee.

Her storytelling is superb - with characters & scenarios that are always wonderful, complicated, lyrical, memorable and magical. . . .just like what was invoked in my mind thru the smells wafting in from Karachi!

It's so sad to hear that they are being displaced from their home - altho I can think of less fine options than moving to Islamabad - yet another rich & colorful place, invoking many rich & colorful imaginings.

I remember at the height of violence in the streets of the Philippines - right before martial law was declared (in '74, as I was just graduating from high school) & then again with all the coups after Marcos absconded (over 23 years later, as we all took to the streets in celebration) - I wondered if the home of my birth would ever survive.

I guess, no matter what transpires in the outer world, we'll have our insights & memories to hold dear to, huh?

after hardly any sleep for more than 13 days, I'm amazed I'm so awake. . . .on so many levels : )

it's tiresome enough when your have two kids to chase after but when you have senseless adults it's a whole lot more irritating!
